The Program Criteria

Girls can enter The Spread Her Wings program at 6th or 7th grade and continue until they enter college. Spread Her Wings’ students meet for three hours one day a month. During these monthly meetings, the girls participate in a variety of recreational, educational, and volunteer activities designed to help the girls become self-confident, well-rounded individuals who are emotionally and mentally prepared for success in college and beyond. The girls develop lifelong bonds with each other that will serve as a critical support system when they transition to their college careers. Older girls are expected to help mentor the younger participants. For many of the girls participating in the Spread Her Wings program, this support system may be the only consistent source of inspiration and encouragement they experience.

Sample activities may include:

  • Goal setting & team-building exercises
  • Stress management & peer-pressure workshops & activities
  • Promoting education & staying in school
  • Tutoring & college prep
  • Community service projects
  • Health & wellness programs
  • Life skills development
  • Arts & cultural experiences
  • Job shadowing and internships
  • Etiquette Classes
